Dogs Who Refuse To Potty Train

dogs who refuse to potty train
Question: People who have had serious ‘problem’ dogs?

I’m not talking about dogs that refused to heel or dogs that took 6 months to potty train. I mean dogs with severe issues – nervousness, aggression etc.
How did you deal with it?
Have you been able to cure these behaviors?
If so, how?
Have you tried trainers? How many?
Have you gotten any bad advice from professionals on how to deal with the problems?
Great answers so far. Keep them coming!!
Bernese Lover :: When the dog was set loose, did the teenagers manage to get close to the dog and unhook the leash from his collar or did they undo it from wherever it was tied to?

Answer: Great question Genna…I have had some experience with a few of the issues you listed above.
I have had many dogs that passed through my hands and even though I am real anal in picking these dogs, sometimes things do not go as planned.

Fear based aggression, I was given a dog that was like that many moons a go because his owner, a good friend of mine could not handle. I put him down a week later..I refuse to deal with any fear based behaviors that are genetic in nature, period!!
People who talk about knowing what the “trigger” is that will cause the aggressive reaction are dreaming. While it may be true that there is a specific trigger, there may be 100 others as well that are not known to you or even the dog until they manifest!!!
Those dogs need to be put down for the safety of their owners and the public at large.

Nervousness…it depends on what it is about. If it something that was caused by handler error, we can work on it and fix it, if not, the dog is gone. In my mind that is just another word for fear based aggression.
Some of these behaviors can be cured, if they are not genetic in nature, if they are, not, they cannot, they can be managed, but, that leaves you with that HUGE potential for a lawsuit, again, no thanks!

I have never tried trainers because I am the best at what I do, I trust me more then anyone else and although I have plenty of people that I can call and consult with, I have no hallucinations about them being able to diagnose something from several thousand miles away!

Bad advice I have only had once from a breeder and I took his word for it about a certain dog that was titled up his azz and was for sale.
That particular dog should have been behind bars at the zoo and stayed there. I imported him and had him here for a year and it was a miserable year before he went to work as a SWAT team entry dog for a large agency and even though he excelled, he was put down for putting his handler in the hospital for a week!!

Before anyone jumps in here and talks about some “fear-full dog.com” page and I am forced to vomit, please be adviced that I had someone tell me about that page and read their Motto to me…how I managed to not engage in a voluntary protein spill was beyond me.
Hope I helped!

ADD: Well…I am a veritable fountain of information and a vessel of knowledge!!!

ADD: Honeybell…since you took out the time to ask, I will answer you. “Take my hand and together we will jump off the board”? Are you serious?
Do you actually believe that all dogs should be alive, that all dogs, even the ones that are screwed in the head should be around?
Look around you, see how many of these dogs live miserable lives and make their owners live even worse ones.
Walking around on eggshells all day planning your life around a dog’s reaction is NOT the way to live.
Dogs were NOT bred for these reasons, why keep them around and not focus on breeding better dogs instead?
I am not a fanatical dog person, I am a realist…maybe you can join us….

ADD: Honeybell…that “hold my hand” quote is the motto from that fearfull.com page…it does not mean hold MY hand…
I am a FIRM believer that each and every dog born into this world should absolutetly and without exception be able to do what the dog was originally bred to do…otherwise we are doing a diservice to that breed.
Why would anyone buy a dog that resembles a breed in looks only? Why not have the whole dog…in spirit too!!
Malinois, BC’s and the rest of the dogs that you mentioned are NOT companion animals, they were not bred for that reason and breeders who breed these working animals without their working ability are criminals, period, end of!!!
You own a malinois, not a working version of one…that is a crime towards that majestic breed.
Breeders have done this to most working breeds to make money and have killed every decent animal out there.

I do not train nor own the “softer type” of dogs that you mentioned. I have helped friends that own them train their dogs, but, in my experience, if I can work with a real dog, I can certainly work with something that resembles one too.
I am a “natural” when it comes to dogs, I understand them at a level very few other people can and that is what makes me better then others in what I do, the fact that I CAN and WILL modify training “on the fly” as they say, to suit that dog in a second while actively working it.

ALL dogs that have temperament issues do not belong here, they should have never been allowed to make it in the first place and the people whom you speak or have the “martyr” syndrome that I know all too well being European!!!
This is NOT about saving every single dog in the world, that is what has gotten us in the crappy position we are in now, this is about breeding sound dogs that can and do the work they are meant to do.
The dog you mentioned that was hanged and such…it shows that you do not have an understanding of what a good, hard dog is and what it will do. No, not everyone needs a dog like that, but, that is what real working temperament is or should be like.

Once again, I am NOT a dog fanatic, I am a REALIST, I believe that all dogs have a purpose, have reason for being created in the first place, keep breeing them for that reason and keep training them using real life methods that work and are proven to work every day.
Have a great night over there!!!

Forgot to add…Reality just IS Honeybell, it NOT diffrent for you and me and it is certainly not open to interpetation.

Dog Potty Training Help

Question: Dog Potty Training?

i wanted to know if anyone had any tips…..i have a yorkie who is a little over a year old….and i currently dont have him trained to go to the bathroom outside…but now i decided that that is what i should do….so im wondering if anyone has any tips…..and to add when i tried to make him go to the bathroom outside he would only pee and then when we get inside then he would poop….does anyone have any suggestions? or should i feed him and immediately take him outside and stay outside until he poops? HELP PLEASE

Answer: First off is he neutered? If he isn’t that is the first thing to fix. Males will mark their territory and being unnutered will make it harder to break him of these habits.. that being said him being a little over a year old these habits can already be “learned” and not behavioral which makes it a little more difficult. You also have the fact that he is a small dog and they are much harder to housetrain by nature. Second off make sure it isn’ta medical condition like a bladder infection by catching a sample and taking it to your vet. A Urinary tract infection will make him urinate more- if he gets a clean bill of health heres what to try: Start training him over as if he was a puppy.. try crate training. When you are not home or you are too busy to watch him he goes outside first then into a crate. The crate must be large enough for him to just lay down in or else he will go to the bathroom in the back and lay in the front. No food or Water goes in crate unless it is a special treat which he will only get when he is in the crate. When you have time to watch him or when you get home from work IMMEDIATELY take him outside and stay with him until he goes to the bathroom- be sure to watch and make sure he does both! Use positive training when he is outside after he goes. A small treat broken into pieces will work or cheerios are good also for positive reinforcement. Keep him in a routine. If he goes in the house don’t rub his face in it just take him outside and be patient with him. Or if you are against crate training or if he is used to going on paper or puppy pads, try moving them every day closer to the door until they are outside. Leave the pads or paper outside so he can go on those. Be sure to pick up the other papers in the house so he doesn’t get confused. The best thing is to be patient. It may take some time. Think in simple terms and don’t over anaylize the situation. After he eats/drinks- goes outside.. after a few hours of rest or play– outside. His bladder is about the size of a golf ball.. he can’t hold too much in there! Also call your veterinarian they may have more suggestions– GOOD LUCK! and happy house training!
